Mushroom Dispensary Opens Against the Law
Magic mushrooms dispensary canada are opening up against the law where members of the public can buy mushrooms and other products such as gummies and teas that contain psilocybin. Shroomyz in Queen West is the latest and it’s a lot like any weed shop with an entrance you buzz into, ID checks, and Apple Store-style display cases filled with carefully arranged products.
The manager of the store, Bruce, says he’s risking a criminal record for selling mushrooms to people who want to microdose and he believes the government should let them do so. He says police shouldn’t be wasting their time cracking down on psilocybin when it’s other drugs — like fentanyl and heroin — killing people in the streets.

He’s not the only one saying this. Eugene Oscapella, who teaches drug law and policy at the University of Ottawa, agrees that police should focus their enforcement efforts on substances that are killing people. “There are other substances out there causing much more harm and there’s an issue of availability, so it makes sense to target those,” he says.
Waterloo Regional Police have raided the store in Cambridge at least twice and officers have made arrests but it’s reopened after each incident. Toronto police have also raided the shop and issued tickets to its owners but they’re allowing the dispensary to continue operating until the court decides what to do.
While Oscapella thinks it’s unlikely that the federal government will decriminalize possession of small amounts of psilocybin any time soon, he sees the legal status of mushrooms changing as more studies and trials show the hallucinatory drug’s healing properties for mental health conditions such as depression and addictions including substance use disorder.
